Training session on argumentation and debate
As a researcher, your ability to effectively communicate your findings and ideas is crucial. This involves not only developing strong arguments based on your research but also being able to engage in constructive debate with other scholars. Recognizing the importance of these skills, UGoveRN organized a professional argumentation and debate training for its members on October 20, 2020, during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The event was led by a former national debate champion and experienced debate trainer, who possesses extensive experience in training members of municipal councils and businesses, among others.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the training was successfully held online, and the participants had the privilege of learning from a former national champion in debating. Through the training, participants learned the fundamental principles of constructing a convincing argument and how to formulate skillful rebuttals.
One of the most exciting aspects of the training was the opportunity to practice argumentation and debate using cases that had nothing to do with urban governance. This not only made the session more engaging but also allowed participants to apply the principles they learned to a range of scenarios.
At the end of the day, all the participants acquired valuable skills that will undoubtedly help them to develop their research in the future. Effective argumentation and debate are essential not only for publishing research but also for presenting at conferences, engaging with stakeholders, and contributing to policy debates!
