Recognitional Justice and the Politics of Citizen Participation in Urban Development

This event has expired

In this talk, Nanke Verloo will present the findings of her research project, ‘Democracy beyond Participation,’ in which she conducted ethnographic fieldwork into the politics of participation in Bogota, Colombia, and Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Based on a deep engagement in the contested experiences of diverse citizen groups, local politicians, policymaking and planning professionals, she has come to theorize the interdependent nature of the representative and deliberative democracy, rethink the need for recognitional justice, and propose methodological approaches that allow urban scholars and professionals to include invisible and tacit forms of citizenship in their efforts to make cities more democratic and inclusive.
