About the Thematic Area
How do land and property markets shape governance, and how does governance in turn shape them? Contemporary governance is deeply intertwined with land and property markets, which exert a powerful influence on decision-making. Any governance choice that overlooks these markets risks being ineffective. This thematic area examines land ownership, ownership patterns, property investment dynamics, housing, and other property sectors of the built environment. It investigates how governance decisions shape property markets, and conversely, how land and property dynamics influence governance structures and decision-making processes. By understanding these interactions, we can better grasp the reciprocal relationship between governance and the built environment, highlighting why land and property are central to contemporary urban and regional decision-making.

Research Symposium at the University of Avignon on the Governance of Land, Property Owners & Real Estate
In May 2024, several UGoveRN members traveled to Avignon to take part in a joint symposium organized by the Geodata for Real Estate Research Chair (GIF) and UGoveRN. The event provided an opportunity to share our research findings, which—though united by a common focus—reflected distinct methodological approaches. Beyond exchanging perspectives, the symposium also marked the beginning of joint projects and closer collaboration between the two groups.
