Fieldtrip in Amsterdam Oudzuid and Zuidas
UGoveRN members recently organized a field trip in Amsterdam Oudzuid and the Zuidas to explore the transformation of planning in the city. The occasion of visiting researcher Federica Scaffidi to the University of Amsterdam provided the perfect opportunity for the members to take a break from their usual routine and delve deeper into the history and transformation of Amsterdam’s built environment.
The group’s theme for the walk was the transformation of planning in Amsterdam. Participants visited Museum De Dageraadand explored social housing built under plan-led planning. They also discussed the evolution of the neighborhood over time, and the changes made in the built environment through the Amsterdam School style of architecture.
As the group made their way through the city, each participant shared their knowledge and insights about the changes in planning and architecture that have taken place in Amsterdam. Some members talked about the social and environmental implications of urban planning, while others discussed the role of institutions in shaping the built environment of the city.
The excursion provided a great opportunity for the UGoveRN members to train their eyes to see larger institutional planning changes in the cities and built environments they regularly visit. By exploring the transformation of Amsterdam’s planning, they were able to gain a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between cities and the people who live and work in them.

Overall, the field trip was a wonderful experience that allowed the UGoveRN members to come together, share their knowledge and insights, and gain a new perspective on Amsterdam’s built environment. The power of such excursions lies in their ability to inspire us to look at our surroundings with fresh eyes, encouraging us to see beyond the surface to the deeper forces that shape our cities and our lives.
